History of the Myanmar Coast Guard

Myanmar is strategically located in the region due to its maritime geography and has a long coastline and abundant sea resources. Protecting marine resources and maritime interests, as well as maritime security, maritime safety, and marine environmental conservation, has become an important responsibility for a coastal country.

On October 6th, 2021, the Myanmar Coast Guard was established with great vision of the Head of State as the Union of the Republic of Myanmar needs a coast guard similarly to other coastal states to fulfill these maritime measures.

Formation

The Prime Minister, the Chairman of the State Administration Council and the Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Services, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, attend the formation and commissioning ceremony of Myanmar Coast Guard Headquarters and No.1 Coast Guard Fleet at No.3 Naval Jetty, Thilawa, Thanlyin Township, Yangon Division on October 6, 2021. Two fast patrol cutters, two coastal cutters and about 300 sailors and officers well organized as the newly born Coast Guard of the Sate.

Purpose of Formation

To protect and preserve maritime interests in the maritime area, ranging from the internal waters to the exclusive economic zone along the Myanmar coast and to address maritime issues.

Authority to Establish the Myanmar Coast Guard

The Myanmar Coast Guard was established by the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar; on 24 September 2021.

The Force at its present

Now, Myanmar Coast Guard is conducting general law enforcement at sea, search and rescue, maritime safety and security, maritime border control with a total of 14 vessels and about 500 sailors and officers.
